We all love a cozy bedroom – a sanctuary where we unwind after a long day, cuddle up with our pets, or indulge in a late-night snack while binge-watching our favorite shows. But just how clean and hygienic are our bedrooms? Mattress Next Day delved into the habits of 2,000 Americans across the nation to uncover some eye-opening truths about what goes on between the sheets – and the results might make you think twice about your bedtime routine.

Pets in the Bedroom:

It's no secret that many Americans adore their pets, so much so that a whopping 66% of respondents confessed to letting their furry companions snuggle up with them in bed each night. Whether it's a loyal pup or a purring feline, the bond between pet and owner is undeniable. However, while this can offer comfort and alleviate stress, it also brings potential hygiene challenges.

Outdoor excursions for cats and the inevitable dirt they track in, or litter residue from indoor felines, can quickly turn your bed into a less-than-sanitary haven. To maintain a clean sleep space, a weekly ritual of washing sheets is crucial. Additionally, ensuring your four-legged friend has ample exercise and a consistent bedtime routine can prevent restless nights filled with playful antics.

How Often Are We Washing?

When it comes to washing sheets, the consensus is clear – it should be done weekly, especially during warmer months. Yet, the survey revealed that almost four in 10 Americans are washing their sheets every two to four weeks, with a startling one in 10 only changing them once a month! GROSS! With more than half of respondents admitting to not washing before bed each night and a significant portion neglecting hand washing after using the restroom, bacteria buildup becomes a legitimate concern.

Neglected Flipping and Rotating:

Your mattress plays an important role in sleep quality and overall health, yet the findings show that 41% of Americans rarely or never flip their mattress. Proper maintenance, including flipping or rotating every six months as recommended by manufacturers, can extend its lifespan and prevent uncomfortable lumps and bumps. Unfortunately, only 15% adhere to this guideline, leaving the majority vulnerable to premature wear and tear.

Oral Health Oversight:

The importance of oral hygiene before bed cannot be overstated, yet a surprising one-third of Americans confessed to not always brushing their teeth before turning in for the night. Regular brushing removes plaque buildup, reduces the risk of tooth decay, and promotes relaxation – essential components of a healthy bedtime routine.

Unexpected Activities Between the Sheets:

While sleep is undoubtedly the primary activity in bed, the survey also uncovered a variety of other behaviors taking place in this space. From the expected, such as watching TV or engaging in intimate moments, to the less conventional, such as eating, smoking, or even exercising, Americans are utilizing their beds for a multitude of activities. However, indulging in food or smoking can lead to unwanted residue and odors, underscoring the importance of regular mattress and bedding maintenance.

The survey offers a glimpse into the state of our bedrooms. While our furry companions and nightly rituals bring comfort and joy, they also highlight maintaining a clean and hygienic bedroom. By prioritizing regular laundering of sheets, flipping or rotating mattresses, practicing good oral hygiene, and minimizing activities that contribute to bed clutter, we can ensure that our bedrooms remain not only cozy but also clean havens for lots of rest and relaxation.
