North Dakota’s Newest Scam Involves Fake Cops and Fake Cash—Don’t Fall for It!
On the roads and highways in our region, the North Dakota Highway Patrol continues to make sure that we remain safe at all times. In addition to that, they do an excellent job of keeping us citizens informed on the latest scam information. It seems that con artists are at it once more, but this time they are using Publishers Clearing House as a sham.
How Does The Latest Scam Work
It would appear that con artists are at it once more, but this time they are using Publishers Clearing House as a sham. A local resident got a call saying she’d won $2 million and that a state trooper (going by the name “Gary Thomas”) would be stopping by to deliver the good news. Spoiler Alert: The NDHP is not in the business of handing out oversized checks. If an NDHP officer shows up at your door, it won’t be with prize money!

How to Spot the Scam:
- If you didn’t enter, you didn’t win—sorry!
- NDHP officers, or local law enforcement, do not work part-time as prize patrol agents.
- If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
So, stay sharp, North Dakota! These pesky scammers are always working on new ways to trick us, but a little skepticism goes a long way. If you do get a call promising millions, just remember—real jackpots don’t come with surprise visits from fake troopers. And if you do happen to strike it rich, don’t forget who warned you about all these scams… I’m happy to help you pick out that new car!
