You can already feel the chilly fall air creeping in, and the trees are beginning to show their golden colors. For many in North Dakota, that means more than just the arrival of autumn—it means hunting season is right around the corner. And for youth hunters, the wait is almost over.

Who Can Participate?
Residents who turn 11, 12, or 13 during the calendar year are eligible for a statewide any antlerless deer license. Those ages 14 and 15—who have either not previously applied for a regular deer gun license or have applied but never received one—are eligible for a license valid for the Youth Deer season and the regular Deer Gun season. This includes 13-year-olds turning 14 in the same year, and 15-year-olds who apply before turning 16.

According to the ND Game & Fish website, It’s important to note that youth applying for the Youth Deer season are not eligible to apply for the regular Deer Gun season.

Rules and Safety Requirements
All youth hunters must be accompanied by a parent, guardian, or another authorized adult who remains within unaided verbal contact. Mentors cannot carry a firearm or bow unless they themselves are licensed youth hunters. Hunters and mentors alike must wear orange clothing for safety.

Hunting Restrictions

  • Ages 11–13: May hunt any antlerless deer, except in certain units (4A–4F, 3B1, and 3B2), where a special license is required for mule deer.

  • Ages 14–15: May hunt any deer, with the same unit restrictions for antlered mule deer.

As always, safety comes first. Whether it’s your first time in the field or a tradition passed down through generations, the Youth Deer Season is a great way to celebrate fall in North Dakota. Good luck, and hunt safe!
