North Dakota Teens Gear Up for Farm Safety Camp—Register Now!
NDSU - Williams County is at it again. This group of individuals amazes me every year with everything they do. Teaching, advocacy, testing, and growing are just some of the things they do.
Did you know working with 4-H and area youth is another thing our extension office does? Yup, and they do a great job too! They are now offering a farm safety camp June 10-12 at Williston State College, and the deadline to apply is coming up fast.
What Is Farm Safety Camp
Farm Safety Camp is a hands-on, workforce safety skill development program designed
for youth ages 13-16 who plan to work for a farmer/rancher on their own farm or for a nonrelative operator.
Participants will learn about the following:
- Safe tractor operation, including a tractor-driving obstacle course Livestock handling
- ATV certification through North Dakota Parks and Recreation
- Rules of the road
- Farm machinery operation
- Farm first aid, including official Stop the Bleed certification
- Agricultural youth laws
- Equipment operation and maintenance
Register by April 17 – Limited Spots Available!
Today, the Williston class has 11 spaces left before the April 17 registration deadline. Registration costs $300 and includes hotel, meals, and PPE. This program authorizes youth to drive tractors above 20 horsepower and farm machinery for nonrelative farmers and ranchers. Participation is encouraged but not essential for family farms. The US Department of Labor's Hazardous Occupations Order in Agriculture (HOOA) requires 14- and 15-year-olds to be certified. Those who complete the program at 13 will receive their certificate on their 14th birthday.
For as many farms as we have in this region, this is a great course. The great thing about it is this course will give participants something to do over their summer break, and simply said, it could save a life. Click here for more details, or to register.
