What Were The Most Searched Items For North Dakota In December?
North Dakotans tend to be a curious bunch, but we wanted to know exactly what peaked their interest over the last month in terms of Google searches.
We looked at Google Topics for the last 30 days to see exactly what was piquing the state's interest over the last month.
How Does Trends Work?
Google Trends uses a Topics API, or Application Programming Interface (basically, software that allows two applications to talk to each other), to review a user's online behavior to determine interests.
For example, Chrome would monitor browsing history each week to see prevalent topics of interest based on site visits.
What Search Terms And Trends Were Popular In North Dakota?
Rightfully so, the state was the most concerned with road conditions over the last month, with the winter storm that hit the central and eastern portions of the state that knocked down hundreds of power poles and left tens of thousands without power during the holidays.

Surprisingly, the top searches were about the Netflix movie Leave the World Behind, which received mixed but slightly positive reviews from critics on Rotten Tomatoes but suffered a review bomb largely due to the film being developed by the production company owned by the Obamas.
In second place was French filmmaker Agnès Varda, who was featured on a Google Doodle in December.
