Republicans Unite Behind Fresh Faces And Seasoned Leaders
District 1 Republicans on Feb. 21, 2026, endorsed three candidates for upcoming legislative races, backing a mix of experienced lawmakers and new leadership they say will serve northwest North Dakota.
Brad Bekkedahl received the district’s endorsement for the North Dakota Senate. First elected in 2014, Bekkedahl currently serves as Senate Appropriations Chair and played a key role in crafting the Primary Residence Credit, aimed at providing property tax relief for homeowners across the state.
For the North Dakota House of Representatives, Republicans endorsed David Richter, who was first elected in 2018. Richter serves on the House Appropriations Committee and is known for his work on education funding, particularly efforts to secure timely funding for rapidly growing school districts.
The district also endorsed Laurie Garbel, who is making her first run for state legislature. Garbel has been active in the community through board service and volunteer work. During Saturday’s event, she echoed remarks from Mike Lefor, emphasizing the importance of serving for the right reasons and focusing on sound public policy and responsible budgeting.

Republicans also recognized Pat Hatlestad, who is retiring at the end of his current term. Hatlestad has represented District 1 since 2006 and has long been an advocate for Williston and surrounding communities.
Party leaders said the endorsed slate reflects a strong commitment to public service, community involvement and effective representation for residents across northwest North Dakota.
