The opening week of North Dakota AAA and AA football action saw several exciting matchups and impressive performances from teams across the state, including the Coyotes' season and home opener against the #1 team in AA.

Williston Coyotes 0 - 41 Minot North Sentinals

The Coyotes dropped their home opener against Minot North in the first-ever football game between the two schools.Despite Minot's lower ranking in AA, they held the top spot in the pre-season rankings.

After a three-and-out to start the game, the Coyotes were able to get a defensive stand and force a field goal to take over deep in their side of the field.

Despite the forward momentum Williston's way, it would soon quickly fade away with a pick six, which was followed by 27 more points being rattled off in the first half to make the halftime score Sentinels 34, Coyotes 0.

Minot North scored on the opening drive of the second half to eclipse the point rule and trigger the running clock. Both teams traded stalling drives until time expired. Dropping the game by the final of

Positively for the Coyotes, some of their deep routes are just a touch off, and once they can locate their targets, there will be a plethora of receivers looking to reel in explosive plays.

Also, the defense struggled at first against the zone and trapping schemes of Minot North, but after a quick adjustment, they were able to keep scoring plays to a minimum, and few if any eclipsed 20 yards officially.

What happened in the rest of the WDA:

In AAA football, Bismarck edged out West Fargo with a narrow 13-12 victory.

In another high-stakes contest, Fargo Shanley defeated Bismarck Century 20-13, showing strong offensive and defensive balance.

Bismarck Legacy kicked off their season with a commanding 34-18 victory over West Fargo Sheyenne.

Fargo North came out on top with a 34-22 victory over Mandan.

Fargo Davies dominated their matchup against Minot, rolling to a convincing 42-14 victory.

On the AA side, Fargo South earned a solid 34-21 victory over Dickinson.

Kindred also turned in an impressive performance, defeating Devils Lake 42-12.

In a competitive matchup, Ray overcame TMCHS (Belcourt) 39-20.

Jamestown started the season off on a high note by triumphing over Wahpeton 23-12.

Grand Forks Central handled Bismarck St. Mary’s 23-12, both solid performances to kick off the season.
