Food lovers in North Dakota may have to pack a bag to taste the nation’s top culinary scenes. A new WalletHub study ranked 182 U.S. cities for affordability, diversity, and dining quality. North Dkota sadly fell outside the top 100, with Fargo and Bismarck the lone North Dakota entries the top 100, landing at No. 103 and No. 163 respectively.

The nation’s five best foodie cities are:

  1. Miami, FL—2,100 miles from Bismarck

  2. Portland, OR—1,400 miles

  3. San Francisco, CA—1,600 miles

  4. Seattle, WA—1,200 miles

  5. Orlando, FL—2,000 miles

Those top-ranked hubs may be far, but North Dakotans can find celebrated food culture closer to home. Minneapolis ranked No. 40, St. Paul came in at 85, and Sioux Falls placed 95. Omaha, Neb. (No. 37), and Denver, Colo. (No. 12), also sit within a day’s drive, offering more accessible foodie destinations for regional travelers.

Analysts say cities like Miami and Portland earned high marks for unique dining options, abundant food trucks, and access to fresh ingredients for home cooks. "The top cities cater not only to individuals who enjoy dining out, but also to foodies who enjoy testing their culinary skills," stated WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo.

Based on proximity to North Dakota, here are the top five closest cities from that list of 100:

  1. Billings, MT (#86) – ~300 miles from western ND.

  2. Missoula, MT (#93) – ~350 miles from western ND.

  3. Sioux Falls, SD (#95) – ~250 miles from southeastern ND.

  4. Minneapolis, MN (#40) – ~225 miles from Fargo, ND.

  5. St. Paul, MN (#85) – ~240 miles from Fargo, ND.
