North Dakota Game and Fish has released updated fishing regulations for the 2026 to 2028 seasons.

The new regulations set guidelines for licenses, catch limits and fishing methods across the state.

The rule establishes the fishing year from April 1st through March 31st and include designated free fishing days for all North Dakotans in 2026 and 2027.

A valid license is required for most anglers, and fish generally cannot be taken for sale outside commercial provisions. Species such as walleye, northern pike, and bass are classified as game fish, while others fall under nongame categories.

Anglers are typically limited to two lines in open water, with some allowances for ice fishing. The regulations also outline what bait is permitted and prohibit importing live bait into the state.

Fishing is open year-round in most areas, though some federal lands and designated waters have restrictions. Some species, including sturgeon and paddlefish, must be released immediately when caught outside authorized seasons.

Daily limits vary by species. The rules also address fish handling, transportation and size restrictions, along with methods such as bow fishing and spearfishing.

State officials said the updates are aimed at maintaining fish populations and providing clear, consistent rules for anglers.
