Matt Clark has been appointed as North Dakota’s State Fire Marshal by Insurance Commissioner Jon Godfread, placing a veteran fire service leader into a role responsible for fire prevention, investigation and life safety efforts across the state.

Clark most recently served as fire chief of the Williston Fire Department, a position that was held for nearly five years. His service with the Williston department began in 2015, during which time experience was gained in operational leadership, public safety administration and coordination with state and local partners.

“Matt Clark brings 21-years of fire service experience to this role and has been a trusted leader in critical legislative discussions affecting fire and public safety,” Godfread said. “He understands the mission, the people, and the partnerships it takes to strengthen our fire service and protect North Dakota Communities.”

Clark’s career has been shaped by experience in strategic planning, civic engagement and organizational leadership. More than 20 years of progressively responsible experience have been accumulated in leadership development, higher education and government operations. Responsibilities throughout his career have included the development and execution of multimillion-dollar budgets, coordination with city councils and legislative bodies, and management of complex interdepartmental initiatives.

Recognition has been received for accreditation success, implementation of continuous improvement initiatives, the development of public-private partnerships and the advancement of policies intended to strengthen organizational effectiveness and public safety outcomes.

Educational credentials held by Clark include a Doctor of Education in Educational Leadership from Liberty University, a Master of Business Administration from Columbia Southern University and a Master of Public Administration from American Military University. Professional certifications include Certified Public Manager, Executive Fire Officer through the National Fire Academy, Chief Fire Officer through the Center for Public Safety Excellence, Senior Professional in Human Resources and Nationally Registered Paramedic, along with numerous fire service and emergency management certifications.

As State Fire Marshal, oversight will be provided for fire code enforcement, inspections, investigations and public education programs. Collaboration will be maintained with local fire departments, state agencies and elected officials to enhance fire safety and community resilience throughout North Dakota.
