Everyone I know seems to be talking about retirement now that the new year is well underway. However, for me? Let's just say that I firmly believe I will continue to work until I am at least 100 years old. Have you noticed the recent price of groceries and gas?

There are several factors to take into account when planning for retirement. Naturally, the most important question is: Did I save enough? (Warning: Most likely not.) Then comes the next conundrum: Should I remain where I am or should I move to a warmer location where I won't have to shovel snow ever again?

Kiplinger just published its list of the cheapest places to retire in the United States, and several of the best locations are in our area, so those who are truly thinking about retirement—and not simply daydreaming about it in between paychecks—should take note.

7. Mankato, Minnesota

Mankato, which has 45,742 residents, has a cost of living that is 13.3% lower than the national average. Minnesota is ranked as the least tax-friendly, so it's not exactly giving retirees a free pass when it comes to taxes. But, this might be the place for you if you enjoy four different seasons and a little adventure when you drive in the winter.

6. Sioux Falls, South Dakota

Sioux Falls is a good option because it has a wellness score of 63, a 12% retiree population, and a cost of living that is 13.7% lower than the national average. The finest aspect? The "Most Tax-friendly" state for retirees is South Dakota! Translation: You keep more of your money for early bird specials and bingo nights.

1. Fargo, North Dakota

First place goes to Fargo, North Dakota, where retirees earn an average of $60,858 and the cost of living is 9.4% lower than the national average. If you can tolerate a little (okay, a lot) snow, it's a wonderful alternative with a well-being score of 66 and a tax-friendly rating.

What about me? You'll find me somewhere warm, ideally on a beach, sipping a cold beverage when I eventually step away from the microphone and hang up my headphones at the ripe age of 100. I suppose I'll simply keep working and dreaming until then.
