When Mother Nature Flips the Script: Expect the Unexpected in North Dakota Camping

But even the best camping trips can take an unexpected turn if Mother Nature decides to shake things up. In North Dakota, the weather is famous for changing its mind quicker than a toddler in a candy store. One minute you’re basking in the sunshine, the next you’re scrambling to keep your hot dogs from blowing away in a gusty thunderstorm.

Here Are A Few Safety Tips From The National Weather Service

So, if you’re camping this summer, do yourself a favor and be weather-ready! Before you zip up the tent and toss the fishing poles in the truck, spend a few minutes checking the forecast. It’s simple, but it can save you from soggy socks and soggier s’mores.

And while you’re at it, pack a NOAA Weather Radio to stay in the know, even when you’re miles from cell service. An emergency kit is also a smart idea, and throw in a flashlight, first aid supplies, and extra water. You’ll be glad you did if a sudden storm decides to crash your marshmallow roast.

Most importantly, have a plan for when thunder starts rumbling. North Dakota’s wide-open spaces are beautiful but not the best place to hang out during a lightning storm. If you hear thunder, move to a sturdy shelter or your hard-topped vehicle. Avoid open fields, hilltops, and tall trees...basically, all the spots we love to camp!

Remember: when thunder roars, go indoors, even in the great outdoors. So go ahead, grab the tackle box, load up the cooler, and hit the great North Dakota wild. Just keep one eye on the sky, and your camping trip will be unforgettable for all the right reasons!
