The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the Food and Drug Administration (FDA), America's Poison Centers, and state and local partners are investigating reports of severe acute illnesses linked to Diamond ShruumzTM brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies, which are marketed as containing a proprietary mushroom blend.

As of June 11, 2024, there have been 12 reported illnesses and 10 hospitalizations across eight U.S. states, with efforts ongoing to identify additional cases.

The cause of these illnesses remains unknown. People are advised not to consume, sell, or serve any flavors of Diamond ShruumzTM chocolate bars, cones, or gummies and should discard any purchased products.

The CDC and FDA have received multiple complaints of severe acute illnesses and other harmful consequences after the consumption of Diamond ShruumzTM brand chocolate bars, cones, and gummies.

These reports have been made to several poison control centers across the United States. These products are sold online and at stores nationwide that offer hemp-derived products, such as cannabidiol (CBD) and delta-8 tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), as well as smoke and vape products.

Products containing psychoactive substances, such as cannabis and mushroom extracts, are becoming increasingly available.

These "edibles" are often marketed as gummy candy, chocolate, or other snack foods and may contain hidden additives, illicit substances, or potentially dangerous pollutants not approved for use in food.

Mushroom-containing products are advertised to improve health or produce non-specific physical or psychoactive effects, with claims such as improved attention and vitality.

Advertising for these products often suggests they can induce euphoria, hallucinations, or psychedelic effects. Common marketing terms include "microdosing," "adaptogens" (substances that help the body adapt to stress), "nootropics" (substances that improve memory or cognitive function), and "functional mushrooms."
