Montana is facing a growing wildfire threat after a surge of more than 15,000 lightning strikes swept across the state in the last 24 hours. Combined with ongoing drought conditions.

The Montana Department of Natural Resources and Conservation (DNRC) is reminding residents and visitors to be extra cautious, and to follow all current fire restrictions. These restrictions vary depending on location and conditions, but many counties are under Stage I or Stage II limits. That could mean anything from banning campfires and fireworks to restricting when certain equipment can be used outdoors.

If you’re planning to enjoy the outdoors, DNRC says a few simple steps can go a long way in preventing human-caused fires. For campfires, only use established fire rings. Keep the fire small, never leave it unattended, and make absolutely sure it’s out—douse it with water, stir in dirt, and check that it’s cool to the touch before walking away.

For folks pulling trailers, be sure chains are secured so they don’t drag and throw sparks. Also, anyone using off-road vehicles, lawn equipment, or gas-powered tools like chainsaws should make sure spark arrestors are installed and working. Avoid using those tools during the hottest, driest parts of the day, especially when it’s windy. It’s also smart to have water and a shovel nearby—just in case.

Driving on dry grass is another common mistake. A hot exhaust pipe can ignite tinder-dry vegetation in seconds. Stick to gravel roads and established trails, and be mindful of where you park.

Homeowners, especially those living near fields, forests, or grasslands, should take a few preventative steps, too. DNRC recommends clearing dry brush and flammable materials away from buildings, trimming up tree limbs, and keeping grass cut low around the home. They even offer free wildfire risk assessments to help identify trouble spots around your property.

With fire season ramping up, and drought gripping parts of the state, the message is clear: be careful. A few extra precautions could prevent a spark from turning into a fast-moving wildfire.
