Gov. Greg Gianforte on Monday signed a proclamation recognizing Feb. 9 as Montana Mining Day, marking the industry’s historic contributions to the state and underscoring its continued role in Montana’s economy.

The designation follows passage of House Bill 203 during the 2025 legislative session. The measure, sponsored by Rep. Curtis Schomer, R-Billings, formally established Feb. 9 as an annual observance commemorating the adoption of Montana’s state motto by the territorial government.

At a ceremony held at the Montana State Capitol, Gianforte said mining has long been central to Montana’s development.

“Mining has long played a vital role in shaping Montana’s history and supporting our economy,” Gianforte said in a statement. “Today, we honor the Treasure State’s rich mining heritage and abundant natural resources and reaffirm our commitment to the men and women who power this industry.”

The proclamation references the state motto, “Oro y Plata,” Spanish for “gold and silver,” and Montana’s nickname, the “Treasure State.” The discovery of gold in the 1860s helped spur early settlement and fueled the region’s economic growth during the Gold Rush era.

Industry representatives and community members attended the signing ceremony. Matt Vincent, executive director of the Montana Mining Association, said the industry continues to provide jobs and resources critical to the state and nation.

According to the association, mining supports nearly 18,500 jobs statewide and generates approximately $7.3 billion in annual economic output.

The proclamation formally designates Feb. 9 as Montana Mining Day each year.
