As Labor Day weekend approaches, North Dakota residents are being urged to plan their celebrations with safety at the forefront. With the increased travel and festivities, the North Dakota Highway Patrol (NDHP) is stepping up its efforts to prevent alcohol-related accidents and ensure a safe holiday for all.

Beginning on Friday, August 30, the NDHP will initiate a sobriety checkpoint in Williams County. This checkpoint, conducted in collaboration with the Williams County Sheriff’s Office and the Williston Police Department, is part of a larger enforcement campaign aimed at keeping the roads safe during the busy holiday weekend. These operations are strategically planned to deter impaired driving and to take dangerous drivers off the road before they can cause harm.

“During the holiday weekend, we are conducting this enforcement event to ensure that everyone can enjoy the holiday safely. If you choose to drive impaired, you’re not only risking your own life but the lives of everyone on the road. Remember, drive sober or get pulled over,” stated NDHP Northwest Regional Sergeant Preston Langer.

This proactive approach is in direct response to troubling statistics. As of August 18, there have been 55 fatalities in 51 crashes on North Dakota roads this year, with approximately 16% of these incidents involving alcohol. These figures highlight the ongoing need for vigilant enforcement to prevent further tragedies.

The NDHP will release the results of the Labor Day enforcement activities in the following week. As you enjoy your Labor Day weekend, keep in mind the importance of making responsible choices. Safety should always be a priority—so drive sober or find a safe way to get home.
