The Upper Missouri Valley Fair Association is sponsoring the annual Pie Baking Contest on Wednesday, June 25.

Meet the Judges

Yours truly will be a judge this year along with Cousin Earl, Steve Slocum, and Nadine Haverlock. This is my second year as a judge, and it’s an honor to join the other long-time judges. Thanks to organizer Lavina Domagala for having me back!

Who Can Enter

The pie baking contest is open to both youth and adults. (No cheesecake is allowed.) The divisions are Adult Pastry Crust, Adult Cracker/Crumb Crust, Youth Pastry Crust and Youth Cracker/Crumb Crust

Judging Criteria

Pies will be judged on Appearance - 20%, Fillings - 20%, Crust - 20%, Flavor - 40%.

Tips from the Judges

Stick with your tried-and-true recipes, the ones your friends and family rave about. This isn’t the time to experiment. And remember, a flavorful, flaky crust can make all the difference!

Important Entry Details

Pies must be dropped off at the Multi-Purpose Building on the fairgrounds on Wednesday, June 25 between 7:30am and 10:30am. Recipes must accompany pies. Judging begins at 11:30am. Winners will be notified by phone after 4:00pm 

Cash Prizes

The UMV Fair Association will award the following prizes in each division: 

  • Adult Pastry Crust: 1st Place $500, 2nd Place $200, 3rd Place $100 
  • Adult Cracker/Crumb Crust: 1st Place $100, 2nd Place $50, 3rd Place $25 
  • Youth Pastry Crust: 1st Place $250, 2nd Place $100, 3rd Place $75 
  • Youth Cracker/Crumb Crust: 1st Place $100, 2nd Place $50, 3rd Place $25 

Final Reminders

Pies become the property of the Upper Missouri Valley Fair Association and should be brought in disposable containers. If not, bakers are responsible for picking up their own containers at the fair office before the end of the fair or they will be discarded. Pies may be served at the 4-H Pop Shoppe. 

 

States with the most born-and-bred residents

Using the most recent data from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2019 American Community Survey, Stacker ranked the states based on the percentage of the total population that was born in their state of residence.
