Thinking About Voting Absentee? Here’s How to Get Your Ballot
If you are planning to vote in Williams County during the 2026 General Election, absentee ballots are now available.
If you have already applied for a 2026 General Election absentee ballot, your ballot will be mailed to you. North Dakota voters must request an absentee ballot before one is sent.
If you would like to vote by absentee ballot but have not applied yet, you can apply online through the North Dakota Secretary of State's website or stop by the Williams County Auditor's Office at 206 E. Broadway in downtown Williston. You can apply for a North Dakota absentee ballot here.
If you apply in person at the Auditor's Office, you can pick up your ballot at the same time.

What Williams County Voters Need to Know
North Dakota does not use traditional voter registration. To vote, you must meet the state's voter qualifications, including being a U.S. citizen and at least 18 years old on Election Day. Voters also need qualifying identification, such as a valid North Dakota ID, a qualifying tribal ID or a 2026 Long-Term Care Certificate from an eligible nursing facility.
Only residents who are qualified to vote in Williams County can vote in Williams County.
If you receive an absentee ballot, remember that it must be returned by the close of polls on Election Day. North Dakota allows absentee ballots to be returned by mail, to a county drop box or in person to the county auditor. Absentee ballots cannot be returned to a polling location on Election Day.

Still Prefer to Vote in Person?
You can also vote in person on Tuesday, November 3, 2026. Polls will be open from 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Williams County has secure absentee ballot drop boxes in Williston, Grenora, Ray, Tioga and Trenton for voters who choose that option.
Whether you plan to vote absentee or in person, now is a good time to make sure you know your options and have what you need before Election Day.
