North Dakota Loses One Of Its Oldest Businesses

The recent shuttering of Peacock Alley is altering the list of North Dakota’s oldest, continuously operating businesses, bringing an end to an era for one of the state’s most recognizable historic businesses.

Peacock Alley first opened in 1933 following the repeal of Prohibition, operating inside the Patterson Hotel in downtown Bismarck. The hotel itself, originally known as the McKenzie, was a landmark of early 20th century luxury and took nearly two decades to complete. Over the years, Peacock Alley became a gathering place for politicians, business leaders and residents, building a reputation that spanned generations before its recent closure.

With its departure, the lineup of North Dakota’s longest-running institutions shifts, highlighting several businesses and organizations that date back to the state’s earliest years.

Among the oldest is Wells Fargo, which traces its presence in North Dakota to the Northwestern National Bank of Fargo, established in 1872. The bank later became part of the national Wells Fargo network and continues to operate across the region.

The Bismarck Tribune has been a media institution for a long time. Founded in 1873 by Clement A. Lounsberry, the paper has chronicled the state’s growth for more than 100 years, winning national recognition including a Pulitzer Prize.

Founded in 1880, Dakota Pharmacy in Bismarck has been serving the community and remains one of the state’s oldest independent pharmacies.

Founded in 1883, the University of North Dakota is the state’s flagship public research university and was established before North Dakota became a state.

Retail history is represented by the Boots and Saddle Club, which began as Meyer’s Saddle and Tack Shop in 1886 and remains tied to the state’s agricultural and ranching heritage.

Also among the state’s long-running institutions is First International Bank & Trust, founded in 1910 in Watford City, which has expanded its footprint across North Dakota and neighboring states.
