Yellowstone National Park may always hold the spotlight, but sometimes travelers are looking for something quieter—something off the beaten path. That’s why TheTravel.com recently pointed to Cross Ranch State Park in central North Dakota as a refreshing alternative for those who want natural beauty without the constant press of crowds.

Tucked along the Missouri River near Washburn, Cross Ranch offers nearly 600 acres of protected land, along with a neighboring 5,000-acre preserve. The landscape is a mix of forest, open prairie, and sweeping river views. A herd of around 200 bison roams the property, a reminder of what the Great Plains once looked like before fences and highways carved them up.

The park is popular with hikers, birdwatchers, and anglers. Trails wind through cottonwood stands and grasslands, and in winter, visitors strap on skis or snowshoes to explore the same paths under a blanket of snow. The river itself is one of the last free-flowing stretches of the Missouri, making it a favorite spot for canoeing, kayaking, and fishing.

Cross Ranch also offers cabins, yurts, and campsites for those looking to linger. Its location on the Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail gives it an added layer of history.

While it may not boast Yellowstone’s geysers or fame, Cross Ranch offers something harder to find: solitude, space, and a chance to experience nature at a slower pace.
