North Dakota Credit Card Holders Stay Ahead Of Payments
North Dakota’s credit card holders are among the least likely in the nation to be falling behind on their payments, according to a new WalletHub study analyzing delinquency rates between the first and second quarters of 2025.
The state ranked 45th in the nation for the increase in credit card delinquency, with a rise of just 18.86%—far below the national leaders. Only five states saw smaller jumps. North Dakota’s share of credit cards reported delinquent in the second quarter stood at 16.26%.
Neighboring states fared significantly worse. South Dakota ranked fourth overall, with a 29.92% increase in delinquency, while Montana placed 20th at 24.67%. Minnesota, meanwhile, topped the national list with a 32.88% increase in delinquent accounts, the steepest jump of any state. Iowa followed in second place with 31.53%, and Kansas ranked third at 30.22%.
At the other end of the spectrum, Florida recorded the smallest increase in credit card delinquency, rising just 14.79%. Vermont, Wyoming, Alaska, and California rounded out the bottom five, each with increases below 19%.
WalletHub noted that rising delinquency rates can indicate broader financial strain. “Long-term credit card delinquency can lead to large drops in your credit score, so it’s imperative to get your account current as quickly as you can,” said WalletHub analyst Chip Lupo. “The good news is that if you manage to get current before 30 days have passed, your delinquency will not be reported to the credit bureaus.”

Nationally, the report found that states in the Midwest saw the sharpest increases in delinquency between quarters, with upper Plains states generally faring better.
