So you’re thinking about having a baby in 2025—congrats! Now grab a chair, because things are about to get spendy. In many parts of the country, bringing a new human into the world costs about as much as a used car. With insurance, a conventional birth averages over $2,600. Without it? Hope that onesie doubles as a financial recovery blanket—because you might be looking at $15,000 or more.

North Dakota may be the answer to rescue your wallet and your sanity.

According to WalletHub, North Dakota ranks #2 overall for having a baby. When checking things like the lowest cost for a conventional delivery in the entire U.S.—around $7,500. Compare that to some states charging up to $27,000, and suddenly the snowy winters feel more like a cozy perk than a tradeoff.

In other metrics, North Dakota also scored the best in states with the lowest complications, lowest C-section costs, lowest babysitter cost per hour, child care centers per capita, and highest mom groups per capita.

North Dakota is also ranked third-best for raising a family long-term. Translation: You don’t have to flee the state once the diapers stop.

Meanwhile, Minnesota is trying to keep up with its excellent health care and low premiums and also high-quality care, leading to the second-lowest maternal mortality rate in the country and the 15th-lowest infant mortality rate in the nation.

Here is how the rest of the nation ranked.
