Scammers are always looking for new ways to trick people out of their hard-earned money, and now a fresh scheme has made its way into North Dakota.

The McKenzie County Sheriff's Office recently received a report of a fraudulent phone call from a restricted number. The caller claimed to be law enforcement and told the citizen they had a warrant. To clear up the supposed legal trouble, the scammer demanded monetary payment over the phone.

Simply stated, this is a scam, and we are seeing more examples of it almost daily.

Law Enforcement Will Never Demand Money Over the Phone

It can't be said enough. Law enforcement agencies, including the McKenzie County Sheriff’s Office, will never call you demanding money for a warrant or any other legal matter. If you receive a suspicious call like this, do not provide any personal or financial information. Instead, hang up immediately.

Here are some key tips to protect yourself from phone scams:

  • Verify Before You Act – If someone claims to be from law enforcement, hang up and call the official number to confirm.
  • Never Give Out Personal Information – Scammers may ask for Social Security numbers, banking details, or other sensitive information. Don't share!
  • Beware of Urgency – Scammers pressure victims to act fast. Legitimate agencies will never rush you into a payment.
  • Report Suspicious Calls – If you receive a call like this, report it to law enforcement immediately.

Stay alert and spread the word with friends and family members—let’s stop these scammers in their tracks!
