Williston State College (WSC) has announced that they will be making significant changes to its business program, rebranding it from Business Management to Business Administration. The department is set to re-launch in Fall 2025 under a new name, as well as offer new courses and opportunities for current and incoming students, according to a press release sent out last week.

The goal of the overhaul is to provide WSC students with more flexibility and opportunities for their degree and career path they are working towards.

“This change reflects where the business world is headed and where our students want to go,” said Leah Windnagle, Associate Professor of Business and Business Program Coordinator. “We’re creating pathways that not only prepare students for the workforce but also give them choices based on their goals—whether that’s climbing the corporate ladder, launching a business, or transferring to a four-year university.”

A New Approach to Business Education

Starting in the Fall 2025 semester, students will complete a core curriculum covering essential business concepts, including:

  • Accounting I & II
  • Principles of Management
  • Microeconomics and Macroeconomics
  • Cooperative Education (CoOp)

There will also be specialized tracks that students can focus on in the department:

  • Administration—For those planning to transfer to a four-year institution.
  • Management—Focused on leadership and operational skills.
  • Marketing—Emphasizing branding, promotion, and market strategy.
  • Entrepreneurship—Designed for future business owners and innovators.

Students who are pursuing their AS or BS degrees will have the option to specialize in one or more areas

“This revamp empowers students to go beyond general studies and dive deep into what they’re passionate about,” Windnagle added. “It’s about giving them the tools they need right now to succeed after graduation.”

Career-Focused Certificates on the Horizon

The college also plans to introduce other professional certificates to support workforce development in the region, an initiative that they have remained steadfast in over the last several years that has received support and praise from the local as well as the state level.

These future offerings will include certificates in:

  • Leadership
  • Human Resources
  • Finance
  • Marketing
