North Dakota Braces for a Midweek Winter Comeback with Snow and Gusty Winds
Confidence is growing that winter weather will make a noticeable return to western and central North Dakota next week, bringing accumulating snow, gusty winds, and potentially challenging travel conditions. Forecasters are increasingly confident that a winter weather system will move across the Northern Plains from Tuesday through Thursday, delivering several rounds of precipitation that will eventually transition to all snow.

According to early outlooks from the National Weather Service, much of North Dakota has a medium to high chance of receiving at least 2 inches of snow during this period. While widespread heavy snowfall is not guaranteed, there are low chances that some northern portions of the state could see totals exceed 6 inches by the end of the event. Even lighter snowfall amounts could still have a significant impact due to wind.
What we know right now is that precipitation may begin as a mix of rain and snow on Tuesday, especially in parts of western and central North Dakota. As colder air moves in, that mix is expected to change over to all snow by Wednesday. This transition period could lead to slick roads as temperatures fluctuate and moisture freezes, particularly during overnight and early morning hours.

Watch for Gusty Winds and Blowing Snow Across Northern North Dakota
Another factor to watch closely will be wind. Gusty east winds are expected to develop Tuesday and Wednesday, increasing the potential for blowing and drifting snow. The highest risk for blowing snow appears to be across northern areas of the state, where open terrain can quickly reduce visibility during stronger gusts. Even modest snowfall combined with wind can create whiteout-like conditions in rural areas.
With winter weather returning, residents are encouraged to plan ahead. Make sure vehicles are winter-ready, allow extra travel time, and keep an emergency kit on hand if you’ll be on the road. Most importantly, stay up to date with the latest forecasts and potential advisories as details become clearer. Conditions can change quickly, and staying informed will be key to navigating North Dakota’s next round of winter weather safely.
