If you have driven past the Old Armory Theatre in Williston lately, you may have noticed something is happening.

Renovations are officially underway at the historic Old Armory, and the project is focused on giving the west steps a much needed facelift.

The project came up during a recent visit to the KEYZ studio by cast members of the upcoming production of Bye Bye Birdie. While talking about the show, the cast also shared the news that work has begun at the Old Armory.

We first told you about the project back in December 2024, when the “Step Up” fundraising campaign was getting started.

The work is part of an effort to restore the entrance and help preserve the Old Armory for future generations.

If you are planning to attend Bye Bye Birdie, there is an important change to know about while the work is underway.

Performances are scheduled for September 25 through 27 and again October 2 through 4. During those performances, people attending the play should use the north entrance of the Old Armory to get inside.

A Community Effort to Save the Steps

The Old Armory has been part of Williston for generations, serving as a gathering place for countless community events, performances, and memories.

The “Step Up” campaign was launched with a goal of raising $350,000 to restore the west steps and help preserve the building for future generations.

The improvements are part of an effort to keep the Old Armory in good shape while preserving the character and history that have made it such an important part of the Williston community.

How You Can Help

The project is underway, but the community can still play a role in making the improvements possible.

Donations of any size can help move the project forward. The Old Armory is also encouraging people to spread the word and get involved with upcoming efforts.

Those interested in supporting the project can visit willistonoldarmory.org/step-up for more information.

You can also call 701-577-0278 with questions.

For a building that has been the backdrop for so many Williston memories, seeing the old steps finally come out is a pretty big step of its own.

And if you're heading to Bye Bye Birdie, just remember: September 25 through 27 and October 2 through 4, use the north entrance.

The Old Armory is getting a little construction dust now, but the goal is to make sure it remains a part of Williston for many years to come.

Feeding the Nation: A Look at North Dakota’s Most Valuable Crops

Farming is the backbone of America—98% of the nation’s 2 million farms are family-run, feeding an average of 166 people each year. Though agriculture makes up just 1% of the U.S. economy, it’s rich in tradition and diversity, with more African American, Hispanic, and Latino farmers than ever before. One in four are new to the field, and many have served in the military.
In 2022, U.S. farm exports hit a record $191 billion. According to Stacker, here’s how North Dakota’s top crops ranked by value—and why the Peace Garden State punches above its weight in feeding the world.
