A young boy was taken to the hospital Saturday after what authorities say appears to have been an accidental shooting west of Williston.

The Williston Fire Department said it was called around 4:14 p.m. to the Whitetail Circle area after getting word that a child had been shot, reportedly with a shotgun. An ambulance from Fire Station 3 headed out right away, but the boy’s family had already decided to drive him in themselves.

Crews tried to meet them en route, but the family reached the hospital first, and responders continued there to help if needed.

Because the incident happened outside city limits, the Williams County Sheriff’s Office is handling the investigation.

A few hours later, around 6:07 p.m., the fire department was called back to move the child to Williston Basin International Airport so he could be flown to Sanford Fargo for specialized care.
