Bundle up, grab your favorite winter hat, and get ready for a day that proves fishing isn’t just a summer sport. Williams County, ND and the United Sportsmen of Williston are inviting young anglers and their families out for one of winter’s most fin-tastic traditions: the Williams County Parks Youth Ice Fishing Derby, happening Saturday, February 28.

New Location, Same Reel Fun: Everything You Need to Know Before You Go

With construction ongoing at Blacktail Dam, this year’s derby is heading to a new (but equally exciting) location—Epping/Springbrook Dam, conveniently located between Williston and Ray. The fun runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., giving kids plenty of time to drop a line, tell a fish story or two, and maybe even reel in their very first catch.

Best of all? This event is completely free and designed with families in mind. From 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., a picnic lunch will be served—because nothing works up an appetite quite like sitting on the ice pretending that tiny tug was “definitely a big one.”

The derby is open to youth ages 15 and under, and all kids must be accompanied by an adult. Never been ice fishing before? No worries at all. Friendly volunteers from the United Sportsmen of Williston will be on hand to help beginners learn the ropes, from baiting hooks to understanding the art of patient waiting. Kids should bring their own poles and tackle, but bait will be provided. Fish houses, tents (clams), and sonar are all welcome—this is serious fun, after all.

16 And Older Need A Fishing Licence

Parents should note that anyone 16 and older will need a valid fishing license. Residents under 16 do not need one, and nonresident youth can fish license-free when accompanied by a licensed adult. Licenses can be purchased online through North Dakota Game and Fish.

This derby isn’t just about catching fish—it’s about creating memories, laughing in the cold, and introducing the next generation to the joys of North Dakota’s great outdoors. Huge thanks to the United Sportsmen of Williston for helping make this winter tradition possible.
