Surviving Cabin Fever in North Dakota: Indoor Activities to Beat the Winter Blues
Ah, January in North Dakota. The snow piles up, the temperatures plummet, and the idea of stepping outside becomes less appealing than hugging a porcupine. But fear not! If you’re stuck indoors battling cabin fever, here are a few things some friends of mine recommend for some fun ways to stay entertained without braving the frosty outdoors.
1. Host a Board Game Olympics
Dust off those old board games and declare a household tournament. From Scrabble to Settlers of Catan, there’s nothing like a little friendly competition to pass the time. Bonus points if you create silly prizes for the winners, like a "Golden Snow Shovel" trophy.

2. Get Crafty with DIY Projects
Tap into your inner Pinterest enthusiast. Try your hand at making homemade candles, knitting a scarf, or even creating some wall art. Who knows? You might discover a hidden talent—or at least end up with a charmingly lopsided mug.
3. Bake Up a Storm
There’s no better excuse to indulge in baked goods than a North Dakota winter. Try out new cookie recipes or challenge yourself to bake a picture-perfect loaf of sourdough bread. The aroma of fresh baking will make your home feel warmer—even if it’s -20°F outside. I volunteer now to help with quality control!
4. Take a Virtual Trip
Thanks to technology, you can explore the world from the comfort of your couch. Visit the Louvre in Paris, tour Yellowstone National Park, or even take a virtual cooking class. The possibilities are endless and make you forget (briefly) about the snowdrifts outside.
5. Embrace a Good Book or Movie Marathon
Nothing beats curling up under a blanket with a good book or your favorite movie series. Whether you’re diving into a gripping mystery or rewatching the entire Marvel Cinematic Universe, this is prime hibernation activity.
Cabin fever doesn’t stand a chance when you’ve got these activities lined up. So grab your fuzzy socks, brew some hot cocoa, and make the most of North Dakota’s wintery charm—without leaving the house.
