In all my travels across North Dakota and Montana, I have seen a lot of things. Some of them were easy to explain—a deer darting across the road, a distant radio tower blinking in the night (seen a lot of those), or a plane cruising across the sky.

But then there are the moments that make you do a double take. Maybe my eyes were playing tricks on me. Maybe I was just tired. But what about those red lights in the sky? They moved way too fast to be a plane. They zigzagged in a way that didn’t make sense at all. Was it a trick of the atmosphere? A drone? Or could it have been... a UFO?

Is North Dakota Good For UFO Sightings

You might not immediately associate our state with extraterrestrial encounters, but a surprising number of people have reported seeing unexplained objects in the sky. The wide-open spaces, the pitch-black night skies, and the low light levels make this area a near-perfect place for stargazing—and, yes, spotting mysterious objects overhead too.

What Have ND Residents Actually Seen

Over the years, reports have trickled in from across the state. People have seen strange lights, odd shapes, and aircraft that don’t seem to follow any laws of physics. Some have sworn they have seen something out of this world, while others remain skeptically intrigued. Regardless, North Dakota has witnessed a significant number of UFO sightings.
