Spring officially begins tomorrow, and the weather is finally showing signs of improvement. After months of winter’s icy grip, people are eager to get outside and soak up the sunshine. That means joggers, dog walkers, and yes—bicyclists—will be back in full force.

With more riders hitting the streets, it’s time for a friendly reminder: Williston’s bike lanes are active again! You’ve seen them—the painted lanes on the roads set aside for cyclists. And if you haven’t, well, now’s a great time to start paying attention! Here are a few tips from Vision Zero North Dakota.

Cyclists, Be Careful Out There

If you are a seasoned rider or just getting on that bike for the first time this year, safety should always be top of mind. Here are a few easy tips to remember:

  • Wear a helmet – It might not be the most stylish accessory, but it’s the most important one!
  • Be aware of traffic – Not everyone is looking for you, so stay alert.
  • Check your brakes – Because stopping is just as important as going!
  • Ride with traffic – Not against it. You’re part of the road, so follow the rules.
  • Watch those blind spots – If you can’t see a driver’s mirrors, you know they probably can’t see you.

Drivers Need To Share the Road

Folks on bikes aren’t obstacles out there—they’re travelers too. Here’s how you can help keep our local roads safe for everyone:

  • Yield to those on a bike – They do move faster, so don’t assume you can just turn in front of them.
  • Look before making a turn – Especially when making a right turn on red or just backing out of a parking spot.
  • Obey those speed limits – Slow down and be extra careful.
  • Give them some room – Pass a cyclist like you would another vehicle, allowing plenty of room.

Spring is a season for outdoor fun—we all need to make sure it’s a safe one for everyone. Whether you're behind the wheel or the handlebars, we all need to pay attention, be courteous, and share the road.

Enjoy the warmer temps ahead, Williston...we have been waiting!
