A Holiday Tradition Since 1891: The Legacy of the Red Kettle Campaign

Did you know the Red Kettle Campaign is the oldest annual charitable fundraiser of its kind in the United States? What began in 1891 with a Salvation Army captain in San Francisco has grown into one of the most recognizable and impactful charity traditions in the country. The campaign helps provide toys for children, coats for the homeless, food for the hungry, and year-round social services for families in need.

  • In 2010, the Salvation Army raised a record $142 million during the Christmas campaign.

  • Volunteer bell ringers staff kettles at roughly 25,000 locations nationwide.

  • In many places, anonymous donors slip gold coins or rings into the kettles as a holiday surprise.

  • 83 cents of every dollar donated supports Salvation Army programs around the world.

Here in Williston, the local Salvation Army has set its 2025 Red Kettle goal at $120,000. To reach it, they’re asking for our community’s support.
