North Dakota’s Health and Human Services (HHS) department has secured $4 million annually for the next three years to combat opioid use and its consequences, thanks to a State Opioid Response (SOR) grant from the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration (SAMHSA).

This funding, totaling $12 million, will support statewide efforts for opioid use disorder treatment and overdose prevention through September 2027.

Since 2017, the Behavioral Health Division has utilized federal opioid funding for essential services, supporting North Dakota communities through prevention, harm reduction, treatment, and recovery programs.

This latest grant will expand and strengthen these initiatives by funding multiple partnerships across the state, including those with local public health units, tribal communities, academic institutions, and correctional facilities.

Under this program, 27 local public health units across North Dakota will be involved in implementing opioid response activities tailored to meet the needs of their communities.

Additionally, three of the state’s federally recognized tribes will participate, helping to address opioid use disorder and improve outcomes within their communities.

North Dakota State University’s School of Pharmacy will play a significant role through the Opioid and Naloxone Education (ONE) Program, which will offer opioid risk screenings at pharmacies statewide. Educational institutions across the state will also provide students with overdose prevention and naloxone training.

The Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation (DOCR) will integrate opioid treatment for incarcerated individuals, promoting recovery and connecting them to support resources post-release.

The funding will also allow the state to continue providing naloxone, a life-saving overdose reversal medication, at no cost. For more information on North Dakota’s opioid response initiatives or to access free naloxone, visit hhs.nd.gov/opioids.
