I'm not the kind of person that picks up a book and loses myself in a few chapters. However, a number of my family swear by the calming power of a good book, and my grandmother Millie loved to read. During a recent conversation, someone made the suggestion that perhaps the subject—rather than the act of reading—is the problem for me. The decision to explore North Dakota-set novels resulted from that.

So I went looking, and the huge amount of works that are set in the Peace Garden State actually impressed me. I even found today that many of the 100 books on Goodreads can be read on a Kindle or online. So that makes things more convenient for those of us that might shy away from reading.

Who knows? Perhaps this small attempt will make me a bookworm after all. Finding stories based in North Dakota has been enjoyable, if nothing else. It might be worthwhile to check out a few novels with a local connection, regardless of whether you're a voracious reader or simply searching for a fresh way to relax. I have some reading to do, if you don't mind!

These reading recommendations all received ratings of four or above, and the subjects covered are fairly diverse. I assure you that these choices have something to offer everyone.

Now let's explore the novels with the highest ratings on Goodreads.com:
