Applications Reopened for ND Board of Public School Education
North Dakota’s State School Superintendent, Kirsten Baesler, announced on Wednesday that applications are once again being accepted for a vacancy on the state Board of Public School Education. This board plays a crucial role in overseeing K-12 and career and technical education across the state.
Eligible candidates must be registered voters in North Dakota, serve on a school board, and reside in one of eight designated counties: Burleigh, Stutsman, Eddy, Foster, Kidder, McLean, Sheridan, or Wells. The position became available following the resignation of board member Burdell Johnson in August. The selected applicant will fulfill the remainder of Johnson’s term, which is set to conclude on June 30, 2026.
Interested North Dakotans from the specified counties are encouraged to apply through the governor’s website. The application window will remain open until 5 p.m. Central Time on Friday, October 11, 2024. Baesler noted that the initial application period, announced in August, did not yield a candidate who met the school board membership requirement, prompting the reopening of the process.
The Board of Public School Education consists of seven members, all appointed by the governor for six-year terms. This board also serves as part of the state Board of Career and Technical Education, overseeing North Dakota’s Department of Career and Technical Education and its programs.
In addition to managing requests for property transfers and district reorganizations, the board collaborates with North Dakota’s seven regional education associations and the K-12 Education Coordination Council, which fosters cooperation among education stakeholders and supports innovative educational initiatives.
Applications will undergo review by a committee composed of the presidents of North Dakota United, the North Dakota Council of Educational Leaders, and the North Dakota School Boards Association. This committee will provide a shortlist of candidates for the governor's consideration for appointment.
