If you're anything like me, your bank account tends to pull a Houdini act halfway through the month. One minute you’re feeling rich(ish) on payday, and the next, you’re wondering if the couch cushions can cough up enough for a coffee.

Well, it turns out we’re not imagining things. Our wallets are under some pressure. Newsweek recently shared a map created by Wallethub, highlighting the most financially distressed states in the country.

North Dakota’s Not the Most Stressed—But at Least We’re Not Texas!

Now, I'm not saying that’s great, but hey, it’s not Texas. They ranked number one for the most financially stressed in the nation. Yikes! Must be a lot of heat and even more bills down there. Meanwhile, Hawaii is somehow the least stressed state when it comes to finances. It has to be all the sunsets, surfing, and shaved ice—because it certainly isn’t the rent prices...at least from what I'm told!

How Did Our Neighbors Score?

Closer to home, our Midwestern neighbors aren’t faring a whole lot better. Minnesota landed at 28th, South Dakota pulled in at 38th, and Montana is holding steady at 29th. Basically, we’re all rowing the same leaky boat, using duct tape, coupons, and a deep sense of denial to keep afloat.

But hey, we do have a lot going for us—wide-open spaces, friendly folks, and the ability to survive a winter that would make most of the country cry. So, while we may be 34th on the financial distress scale, we’re first in resilience, right? And with a little budgeting, a lot of humor, and maybe fewer drive-thru stops (okay, maybe just one less), we might just stretch that paycheck a little farther next month.

Or at least until Wednesday.
