Over the holiday weekend, there were tons of motorcycles out enjoying the sunshine in between rain showers. I get it. Nice weather, the need for speed, and the thrill of the ride are something that can't be beaten. On 2 separate occasions this past weekend, I had to say I can't believe that person has a motorcycle license. They were driving recklessly, and going way too fast. One driver was riding his motorcycle on the walking path (on the cement) where walkers had to move! We all need to do our part to keep everyone safe on our roads. This piece will give motorcyclists helpful tips that will help them stay safe while riding around North Dakota.

Wear the Right Gear:

You can't say enough about how important it is to wear the right safety gear. In case of an accident, motorcyclists should always wear a helmet that is approved by the Department of Transportation (DOT), protected eyewear, sturdy boots, gloves, and durable clothing. Gear that is reflective and highly colored can make it easier to see, especially when there isn't much light.

Follow traffic laws:

It's important for everyone on the road, including bikers, to follow traffic laws. Follow the speed limits, keep a safe distance from other cars, and use your signs when you want to change lanes or turn. Pay attention to North Dakota's motorcycle rules, such as the need for daytime headlights and the need to stay in your lane. This includes NOT riding on walking paths around town.

Be aware of the weather:

North Dakota has a wide range of weather conditions, so motorbike riders need to be ready for sudden changes. Before you go out, check the weather report and make sure you have the right rain gear or warm clothes for the season. Be careful when there are strong winds, rains, or slick roads, and change your speed as needed.

Stay Visible:

Because motorcycles are smaller, they can be harder for other drivers to see. Use your headlights, taillights, and turn signs correctly to make yourself more visible. Wear clothes with bright colors and watch out for blind spots when riding next to other cars.

Regular Maintenance:

It's important for safety that you keep your motorbike in good shape. Check the brakes, lights, tread depth, fuel levels, and tire pressure every so often. Make sure your bike is in good shape by giving it regular care and fixing any problems right away.
