February is flying by — and being the shortest month of the year doesn’t help. But even as the calendar pages turn quickly, February remains an important time in Williston, especially for those who value history, art, and community. It’s also a critical moment for one of Williston's most cherished landmarks: the James Memorial Art Center.

For more than a century, The James has stood as far more than just a building. Originally constructed in 1911 as a public library, it has long served as a gathering place, a creative hub, and a symbol of Williston’s rich history. Thanks to the dedication of its members and supporters, The James continues to thrive as a center for art, education, and community connection.

Preserving a Legacy: Member Support Brings Vital Upgrades to The James

Over the years, membership support has allowed for several critical preservation projects that help keep the building safe, functional, and welcoming. Recent improvements — both large and small — include concrete work outside the building, repair of grout joints between bricks, restoration of the north door and windows, floor resurfacing, copper roof and dome repair, handicap ramp and parking upgrades, storm window replacement, landscaping, and a refreshed restroom area. These projects demonstrate a continued commitment to preserving not just a structure, but a legacy.

An Essential Upgrade: Tackling The James’ Most Urgent Preservation Need

Now, The James is facing one of its most urgent challenges yet: replacing the aging sewer line. It may not be glamorous, but it is absolutely essential. This major project is vital to protecting the integrity of the building and ensuring it can continue to serve thousands of visitors, artists, students, and community members each year.

Double the Impact: Memberships Matched to Support a Historic Treasure

Membership during this year’s drive (December through February) directly supports this critical work — and there’s an added incentive. A very generous donor has pledged to match dollar-for-dollar all membership renewals and double match all new memberships. With several membership levels available for individuals, families, and businesses, there’s an option to fit nearly every need and budget. Community members can join or renew by visiting thejamesmemorial.org or stopping by in person during office hours.

Beyond preservation, The James continues to offer a wide range of programs and opportunities. Monthly rotating art exhibits fill both galleries, while youth and adult art education programs nurture creativity across generations. The center also offers several affordable rental venue options and hosts free, open-to-the-public events such as Artist Receptions, Game Nights, Spotlight Open Mic nights, and seasonal gatherings.

Located at 621 1st Avenue W in Williston, The James is open Monday through Thursday from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., Fridays from noon to 5 p.m., and Sundays from 1 to 5 p.m. from September through April. It is closed on federally observed holidays.

Run by the James Memorial Preservation Society, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit formed in 1993 to save the building from demolition, The James remains a welcoming creative space for Williston and the surrounding region. By becoming a member today — and having that membership matched — you’re helping preserve Williston’s artistic and historic heart for generations to come.
