Map Posted By Storm Chasers Show North Dakota In Tornado Alley
August in North Dakota is not typically a month when we see a lot of tornadoes.
According to the data from the Weather Channel, North Dakota sees the majority of its tornadoes in June, where the Peace Garden State averages 13 per month. We surpassed that amount in a big way this past June.
Many people don't realize that North Dakota averages more tornadoes in June than traditional tornado hot spots like Oklahoma and Kansas.
We also see a fair number of tornadoes in July, and to a lesser degree in August. That could change this August.
According to a post from Live Storm Chasers on Facebook, they have southern North Dakota in tornado alley for the first couple of weeks of August. Here's that map for you to check out.
As we enter the tropical/hurricane season, those systems often bring tornado threats of their own. This is based on 30 years' worth of climatology, according to their post.
As you can see by the map, much of southern North Dakota looks to be in the bullseye for tornado activity, including much of our listening area in south-central North Dakota.
Now, before anyone gets their panties in a bunch, this is NOT a forecast.
I will say this: I have more confidence in storm chasers than most meteorologists when it comes to predicting the weather. Just saying, personal observation.
Live Storm Chasers have already spent a good amount of time in North Dakota this June chasing tornadoes. We might not be done seeing them this year.
