As one does, I went to the Bismarck Spirit Halloween Store as soon as it opened. You have to, even if you don't plan on buying anything, and you're much too old to dress up and go trick-or-treating. It's a spooky season must-do. We like to see what creative new yard decorations they have, and we like to see the new trendy costumes that are out each season.

While I was there, I noticed a couple things, and thought I should share my observations.

What to Know

As you can imagine, Bismarck's Spirit Halloween store is a bit spooky. I brought a friend with me to the store, and suffice to say, they were not ready for it.

In the middle of the of the store, you will notice, they have an elaborate display. There is a subway train you can walk into but do it with caution. If you're not the type that likes jump scares, beware. My friend completely unaware, walked by it. The next thing I heard was a screech. No, not from the giant animatronic skeleton, but from my friend. The display is surrounded by these, and they will scare you.

My friend had such a reaction that people nearby had to stop and laugh. I was upset because dangit, I didn't get it on camera.

One other thing you should know about Spirit Halloween this year, is that they no longer have fitting rooms, or at least they didn't when I went. Maybe it became an issue, trying to get all the costumes and accessories back in the bags. Maybe there was a theft problem, but they told me I could try them on over my clothes in the aisle. Being the person that I am, I went right ahead and did that.

So, yes, watch out for the jump scares, and if you're looking for a costume, go in with a plan. Know your sizes and maybe have an idea of what look you're going for.

Have fun this Halloween, and I hope you find the perfect costume.

LOOK: How Halloween has changed in the past 100 years

Stacker compiled a list of ways that Halloween has changed over the last 100 years, from how we celebrate it on the day to the costumes we wear trick-or-treating. We’ve included events, inventions, and trends that changed the ways that Halloween was celebrated over time. Many of these traditions were phased out over time. But just like fake blood in a carpet, every bit of Halloween’s history left an impression we can see traces of today.
