Tax Extension Deadline Is Today for North Dakota Residents
North Dakota taxpayers who requested an extension on their individual income tax returns are being reminded that the deadline to file is fast approaching. Tax Commissioner Brian Kroshus announced that the final date to submit state tax returns is Today, Tuesday, October 15.
“Individuals were required to pay any taxes owed by the April deadline, but they also had the option to file for an extension to submit their tax return,” Kroshus said. “I encourage anyone who received an extension to be sure to file by the quickly approaching deadline.”
Taxpayers who obtained a federal extension are automatically granted an extension to file their state returns without penalty through October 15, 2024. Kroshus noted that electronic filing is the most efficient method for those still needing to submit their returns.
For those opting to file by mail, returns must be postmarked by October 15 to avoid penalties. Alternatively, taxpayers can hand-deliver their returns to the North Dakota Office of State Tax Commissioner at the State Capitol in Bismarck. The office is located on the 8th floor and is open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on weekdays.
However, Kroshus reminded taxpayers that interest on any unpaid tax balances has been accruing since the original April 15 deadline. Additionally, late filing penalties will apply if returns are not submitted by the October 15 extension deadline.

Taxpayers seeking assistance with their state income tax returns can reach out to the Office of the State Tax Commissioner at 701-328-1247. More information, including tax-related programs and resources, can be found on the official website at tax.nd.gov. The office also provides updates via social media platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, and X.
