From Grenora, North Dakota to Target Field: Oscar Quarne’s Special Night
Folks in western North Dakota, especially around Grenora, are smiling a little bigger today after one of their own received a special honor at Target Field. On Tuesday night, Oscar Quarne—age 98, World War II veteran, and proud Grenora native—was invited to take part in the Minnesota Twins’ flag-raising ceremony before the game.

It was a moment that brought together small-town pride, baseball tradition, and a well-deserved recognition for a man who has lived nearly a century of service and dedication. Oscar, who served his country during World War II, was joined by a few close friends and fellow American Legion members for the memorable evening. Among them were Marvin Skabo, 96, a Korean War veteran, along with David Brevick and Seth Coughlin.
Family, friends, and fellow veterans agree—this was an honor not only for Oscar, but for the entire Grenora community.

Oscar Quarne Honored—But This Yankees Fan Got an Extra Win at Target Field
Now, here’s a little detail that might raise an eyebrow: don’t tell the Minnesota Twins, but Oscar is a Yankees fan through and through! As fate would have it, the Yankees beat the Twins in a close game, 10–9. For Oscar, that made the night even sweeter—a win for his favorite team and a once-in-a-lifetime honor on the field.
It’s not every day that a small-town veteran gets to be honored on such a big stage. Oscar Quarne’s flag-raising moment wasn’t just about baseball—it was about honoring a life well-lived, a community that never forgets its heroes, and a reminder that even in the biggest stadiums, hometown pride always shines brightest.
