28 North Dakota Counties Under Red Flag Conditions For Friday, April 11
Ah, North Dakota—where the summers are too hot, the winters are too cold, and in between, Mother Nature likes to keep us hopping. This Friday, (tomorrow) we’re in for a special treat: a Red Flag Warning, which is basically nature’s way of saying, “Hey, maybe don’t play with fire today.” Based on how many counties this affects. this is not to be taken lightly.

The National Weather Service in Bismarck predicts weather that will make firefighters nervous in western and central North Dakota. With temperatures soaring into the 70s, humidity levels dropping to a bone-dry 12 percent, and southerly winds kicking up to 35 mph, it’s the perfect recipe for a campfire or stray cigerette to start a fire fast.
What Does This Mean for You?
If you had grand plans of roasting marshmallows or burning off that pile of leaves you’ve been meaning to take care of, maybe reschedule. With as dry as it is in North Dakota, a single spark could turn into a full-blown prairie wildfire faster than you can say “oh no.”
Farmers, ranchers, and backyard grill masters—take note! Any fire that starts will spread rapidly and be difficult to control. This is not the day to test your fire-starting skills unless you want to be the star of the evening news.
So, What Should You Do?
Avoid open flames. Yes, that means no bonfires, no burning brush, and maybe even reconsider that backyard BBQ.
Watch out for sparks. Even something as small as a cigarette butt or a hot muffler in dry grass could start a fire.
Stay alert. If you see smoke or fire, report it immediately. This is not the time for a “wait and see” approach.
The warning runs from 11 AM to 9 PM CDT (10 AM to 8 PM MDT), and includes 28 counties. So if you must be outside, keep it fire-free. It could be extended over the weekend, so keep an eye on social media for additional updates. Stay safe, North Dakota.
